We've had our eye on the Chicago-based online platform Stylisted — which puts vetted beauty professionals at the fingertips of women looking for last-minute bookings and in-home appointments — since its launch in 2013. The idea for Stylisted was born when founders Lauren Katzberg and Julia Carmona met as MBA students at the University of Chicago and found themselves at an age that comes with quite a few weddings to attend. "We wanted the help of a skilled professional to go beyond our normal beauty routine," says Julia. "But we consistently had trouble finding someone who was talented and available when and where we needed them. Lauren is very particular about her hair and makeup, and I'm perpetually late to everything, so quality and convenience were key."
With their professional backgrounds in the beauty industry, the two knew that stylists were always looking to grow their own freelance businesses on the side. "We set out to build a solution, connecting freelance hairstylists and makeup artists with women like us." Having now expanded to NYC, LA and D.C., Stylisted recently launched a wedding concierge service, so we tapped these two industry vets for five tips to looking your very best on your wedding day.
1. Splurge on in-home services.
While it could be comical running around town with a bridal party in tow, it can be incredibly stressful. "Bringing beauty services to you eliminates the factors that are usually out of your control, such as traffic, parking or weather," says Lauren. "Instead, you can pour Champagne, listen to music, take pictures, and have fun with your bridesmaids before you walk down the aisle."
2. Get to know your stylist.
"Finding a stylist for your wedding day is as much about a personality fit as it is about finding someone with the skills you need," says Julia, who recommends reading client reviews online and looking for photos of past work. "If you're an out-of-town bride, you can exchange emails and phone calls with your stylist to make sure you're excited to have that person with you on your wedding day." Plus, a third party like a concierge service like Stylisted can vouch for the stylist's skill set and help you find the perfect fit.
3. Perfect your look well in advance.
Book your hair (and even makeup) stylist for events leading up to the wedding in order to test out different looks and find the best fit. Have them hold the date of your wedding as well as a trial run months in advance, says Lauren, who also recommends hiring them for the rehearsal dinner so you can go over any tweaks the night before the wedding.
4. Start with washed faces and (relatively) clean hair.
"It's definitely best to wash and dry your hair the night before to ensure your style has staying power, particularly if you're getting an updo," says Lauren. "If you're wearing your hair down, or if you have thinner hair that tends to look oily, you can certainly wash and dry it that morning. The key here is to arrive with dry hair. Asking the stylist to blowout your hair and then style it will add an extra 20-30 minutes to your appointment and might throw off the schedule."
5. Book services through an established network.
"We've heard horror stories about cars breaking down or stylists getting sick," says Julia. "Scrambling for a backup stylist is a terrible way to start the day, but with a network like Stylisted, we'll ensure you're taken care of so if the unexpected happens, you don't have to take on that stress."
