How to Entertain Your Nieces and Nephews (aka Flower Girls and Ring Bearers) During an Adults-Only Reception

Etiquette, Kids

Of course you want the adorable mini members of your family to be part of the wedding, and by limiting children to relatives, you can easily maintain an adult vibe at the reception. Here are a few tips on how to keep their attention spans and energy levels at bay.

There's nothing like a classic kids' table at a reception, even if it's an adults-only party. If the number of nieces and nephews involved in the wedding warrants a small table, consider giving them that independent space. If you can afford it, hire a babysitter to sit with the kids and entertain them during dinner, and make sure the caterer will prepare a kid-friendly meal. Surprise the children with goody bags filled with no-mess snacks and candies, as well as small activities. After dinner, the sitter can help the parents keep track of them at the reception when they steal the spotlight on the dance floor; or if the venue has the space, she can turn on a movie in an adjoining room for when they need a break.

Trust us when we say this: Children want to be part of the celebration and will rise to the occasion. Giving them important roles in the wedding as well as a proper seat at the reception will make them feel special. More often than not, their behavior will follow suit, so let them be part of the fun, especially if they are family. By the time they get the wiggles, the party will be turning up anyways, and there's nothing cuter than a little flower girl dancing with the bride.
