You worked your booty off to get your body wedding ready, and now that the big day's over and done with you're so not trying to become another statistic. A 2014 Australian study confirmed what most of us already know: Brides tend to pack on the pounds after their walk down the aisle. In this particular study, newlywed women gained on average 4.4 pounds six months into marriage. While this doesn't seem like much, those who really went all out to fit into their gowns weighed nearly 10 pounds more at the half-year mark than they did on their wedding day. Not exactly a big confidence booster, right? To stay fit and feeling your absolute best (because that's what it's really about post-wedding), Los Angeles-based health and wellness expert Sophie Jaffe, founder of The Philosophie, offers her top tips.
Don't skip meals.
Even when you see the number on the scale creeping up...yep, the honeymoon will do that to you, brides. As Jaffe explains, skipping meals can cause your energy levels to take a nosedive, deprive your body of nutrients and (gasp!) may actually result in weight gain, which would totally defeat the purpose. "The Oregon Research Institute (ORI) found that meal skipping leads to cravings for foods higher in fats and sugar."
Eat at home more often.
And focus on ingredients, not counting calories. Tsk, tsk! "Low calorie foods don't necessarily equate to healthy items since they could be highly processed and lower in nutrients and/or higher in fats and sugars," warns Jaffe. Instead, she suggests opting for whole, unprocessed foods that have retained the bulk of their nutritional value. Try to cut back on eating out too. Sign up for a healthy cooking class with your new hubby as a way to bond, keep your bodies strong and save some dough in the long run.
Keep on kicking butt...
At the gym! Or at home or wherever you can sneak in some squats. Although it's not necessary to call in your personal trainer again, you definitely shouldn't let your fitness goals completely fall by the wayside once you're hitched. Just as it's beneficial to plan out healthy meals for the week ahead, Jaffe says it's equally as helpful to schedule your workouts so that they're more likely to occur. Like your marriage, you'll want to keep it interesting. "When you repeat the same type of routine over and over, your body won't use as much energy as it did at the start," she notes. "Branch out and switch up your sweat sesh for better results."
Get that beauty rest, girl.
For the sake of your body and your marriage, as bad sleep can intensify fights with your spouse...um yikes! "Sleep also increases fat loss and is directly connected to your eating habits the following day," points out Jaffe. In fact, "Studies have shown that those who are well rested have better portion control and will select healthier food options than those who are sleep-deprived." It's all about that work/life balance, brides.
