6 Steps To Smaller-Looking Pores by Your Wedding Day

Hair & Beauty

First things first: Your pore size is your pore size. They can't technically get smaller. But that said, a few little tricks can help them look tighter and tinier. Here's how to do it.

1. Use a cleanser with salicylic acid.
This powerful exfoliator "gets down deep to clean out your pores, which makes them look closer together," says New York City dermatologist Doris Day. We love Dr. Brandt Skincare Pores No More Cleanser. ($35, available at Ulta)

2. Pick the right day cream.
An AM alternative to your usual coffee fix: A cream packed with caffeine, which acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant to help reduce the look of pores. Try Origins GinZing Energy-Boosting Moisturizer. ($27, Origins)

3. Wear sunscreen.
We can't say it enough! Not only is UV protection an everyday essential for maintaining overall beautiful skin, but it also supports your pore-shrinking goals. "Sun exposure causes oil glands to over produce, resulting in larger pores, so sunblock is critical," says Day.

4. Prep with a pore minimizing primer.
Apply a pea size drop (less is more!) and massage it onto your cheeks, nose, and forehead. This makes pores look way smoother and helps makeup go on more evenly, says makeup artist Nick Barose. Try Lancôme La Base Pro Pore Eraser. ($38, Lancôme).

5. Apply a medium coverage liquid foundation.
"Dampen a sponge to get a smoother application; never use your fingers — that makes it look blotchy," says Barose. We like the combo of the Beauty Blender and Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation SPF18, which contains glycylglycine, an amino acid that reduces inflammation to diminish visible pores. ($20, available at Sephora, and $38, Shiseido)

6. Slather on a retinol cream at night
"Retinol is a vitamin A derivative, which helps normalize skin cell turnover, reducing oil production, for smoother skin and minimized pores," says Day. Try Verso Skincare Night Cream. ($100, available at Sephora).
