Custom wedding invitations can be majorly gorgeous — but to get there, you definitely need to jive with your designer. There's a ton of back and forth in the creative process, so finding the right artist that "gets you" as a couple is often the most important part of the deal.

BRIDES had 10 minutes to chat with the ever-gracious and uber-talented Margot Hallac of the luxe New York City invitation studio, Atelier Isabey. We loved dishing with her on all the pretty details behind gorgeous wedding invitations — and what it takes to lock in a great groove with your stationery designer. Here are her top tips!

The best invitation designs aren't "modern or classic" — they're timeless.
"It's important to create an invitation that is visually beautiful, sophisticated, enticing to guests and most important of all, timeless. No matter how cool the design may look, every couple should make sure it's not just a passing trend that they may look back on and regret."

Detail is everything.
"It's not about the style of your wedding invite, it's about the detail that goes into it. We have a range of designs that appeal to many personal styles: classic, modern, artsy, destination, ethnic, etc. What they all have in common is that each piece is painstakingly designed with the closest attention to detail and printed with only the very best of materials and techniques."

Want something unique? Consider mixed media invites!
"If you're looking for an out-of-the-box invite, consider mixed-media printing! We just did a wedding invitation for a Saudi princess, merging watercolor painting, hand calligraphy, foil stamping, and laser cutting. It combined all these special printing techniques in a way we've never done before."

Trust your designer's expertise
"As a designer, nothing is more exciting than a client saying 'I trust you, just go for it!' That's because it gives us the creative latitude to experiment and push ourselves above and beyond anything we've done in the past. Our most innovative work has stemmed from clients who were confident in our abilities and open to ideas they hadn't necessarily seen before."

Tap your invitation designer's unique resources
"Ask about a designer's creative experiences. For me, my background really inspires my work. One of my father's ancestors was a famous painter who created portraits for French nobility (think: Napoleon and Marie Antoinette). So when I create invitations for our couples, I feel connected to my family. I think it's wonderful knowing we're creating art couples can keep and cherish forever."

Get inspired by design outside of the 'wedding world'
"For destination wedding ideas, I've been very inspired by editorial design, like gorgeous magazine spreads you would find in Vogue... There are so many details in a wedding weekend, so it's a wonderful opportunity to make it look like a fashion editorial spread!"

Pick a designer who (truly) loves what they do
"It's always about love. For us, not only do we love weddings, but we love working together. My husband Steve and I got engaged in 2007. I was working at several of the largest branding agencies in New York, so when it came time to design our invites, it was something I felt confident I could do. I knew I wanted something unique and creative, but still incredibly elegant. I fell in love with the process and was soon asked to design invitations for other brides, eventually starting out my own company, Atelier Isabey. The demand was huge so very soon afterwards, Steve, (who actually worked in finance!), decided to join me and bring his expertise in business management to our team. We balance each other perfectly, I run and direct all the creative while he is the business and logistics brains behind our brand."
