In August of 2009, Jill and Haddon and their respective friends both had the same idea: a fun night at a New York City comedy club. The two groups were seated at tables next to each other, and by the end of the night, the pair had exchanged information. "We emailed for a little while, then went back to the comedy club for our first real date!" says Jill. A few years later, after the couple had moved from New York City to Charleston, SC, Haddon planned a trip for he, Jill, and their dog to head to Kiawah Island to take photos for their Christmas card. "Thinking back, it was very unlike Haddon to plan something like that," Jill says. They arrived at the beach before the photographer and, after walking down the sand, Jill turned around to see Haddon on one knee. "Fortunately the photographer was nearby and captured it, because I think I blacked out from shock and excitement!"
The couple went through a few rounds of wedding ideas, ranging from eloping to Greece to inviting their guests to Mexico, before stumbling upon Café Boulud in Palm Beach, Florida. "It's at a gorgeous hotel, has amazing food, and is perfect for an intimate wedding," says Jill. And thankfully they were available on October 12th, 2013, the date she'd already reserved with the band and photographer!
It all came together beautifully, with a lush, flower-filled celebration that focused on the food and the party. Check out the gorgeous details, photographed by Shane Carpenter and Eddie Winter and Eddie Winter of Readyluck!
Jill bought (and returned) four dresses before finally choosing this fitted silk mermaid gown with a full tulle skirt by Hayley Paige. "I kept having buyer's remorse, but less than a month before the wedding I tried this gown on, and it finally felt right. I felt like myself, and was able to buy the floor sample!" she says. Jill paired the gown with crystal-embellished Sergio Rossi shoes.
Instead of a huge wedding party, Jill chose her sister as her only bridesmaid and let her choose her own gown, a burgundy Robert Danes design with a long train.
The bride's bouquet consisted of coral garden roses. "It was stunning, but unbelievably heavy!" laughs Jill.
Haddon also kept his wedding party small, choosing his brother as his only groomsman. Both men wore navy tuxedos, with the groom donning a velvet bowtie as a nod to the fall date.
Guests arrived at St. Ann Catholic Church on trolleys, then Jill and her mother arrived in a limo. "I was so nervous about all the attention that we ended up starting the ceremony late because I refused to get out of the car," says Jill. Once she got to the church steps, however, she spotted Haddon at the end of the aisle, and all she cared about was getting to him. Jill and her mother walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of "All You Need is Love" by The Beatles.
The couple exchanged traditional Catholic vows, then guests tossed lavender as the newlyweds made their way from the church to their getaway car.
After saying "I do," the couple rode around Palm Beach in a vintage baby blue Jeepster, stopping to take photos throughout town. "It was the perfect touch of classic Palm Beach, and we felt so glamorous!" says Jill.
At Café Boulud, guests found their table assignments on watercolor escort cards, then sipped spicy margaritas and peach prosecco sangria as they waited for the bride and groom to arrive. Inside the ballroom, tables were topped with lush arrangements of garden roses, hydrangeas, ranunculus, and baby's breath, interspersed with bowls full of navel oranges. Round tables featured orange trees above the flowers. "The centerpieces were so full, there was barely space for plates on the tables," Jill says.
"We booked a date with our photographer and band before we had a venue," says Jill. "It made it hard to find a venue we loved that also had our date available, but it fell into place at the end."
Once the band got going, the dance floor was packed all night. "We had the wedding that was perfect for us," says Jill, who recommends the same to all other brides. "Hopefully this is your one and only wedding, so it should be everything you want!"
