Orange Is the New Black's Lea DeLaria Reveals Her Wedding Date — and the Special Meaning Behind It

Celebrity, Gay Marriage

The date is set! Lea DeLaria, Orange Is the New Black's Big Boo, and her fiancée Chelsea Fairless have selected a wedding date for their impending nuptials — and, it turns out, the day has bittersweet meaning behind it.

On The View on Friday, the co-hosts prodded DeLaria to divulge wedding details and the date, People reports. "I don't know, I have to look at my manager," she said, looking into the crowd before getting the go-ahead and announcing that she's set to wed January 8, 2017.

So why the long engagement? "As you can see, Chelsea has much style," explained DeLaria. "She wants to plan the whole thing herself...that takes time."

The couple decided on January 8 because it marks the anniversary of her late parents, she said, adding that they accepted and loved her for who she is — unlike the tumultuous relationship her character has with her own parents. "The difference is, my parents learned. They listened to me, and I listened to them, and they realized it was better for me to be comfortable in my own skin than for me to be who they needed me to be," she said. "And we came together and loved together."

DeLaria met her fiancée more than two years ago through fellow OITNB co-star Emma Myles, who plays Leanne Taylor. "We've been together ever since," DeLaria told E! News shortly after the actress announced her betrothal on Facebook in February.

DeLaria popped the question to Fairless after January's Screen Actors Guild Awards, where OINTB took home the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series. "Everyone saw how emotional I was at the SAG awards. I was so filled with love," she confessed to E!. "I turned to her at the Netflix party that night and asked her to marry me. We announced it to all of our friends there...[But] we've kept it pretty hush-hush since."

Despite keeping things "hush-hush," the couple has dished on a few very exciting wedding plans to fans. "Sandra Bernhardt will be marrying us," DeLaria revealed. "She's a very close friend and she's an officiant. We called her right away. And Jesse Tyler Ferguson will be my best man. We go way back."
