WATCH: This Halloween-Inspired Proposal Video Will Give You the Chills

Most women want their proposal to be a surprise, but Alec Wells gave his girlfriend Katherine Canipe a true shock. A YouTube video posted on Wednesday shows Wells popping the question in scenario inspired by the classic 1978 horror film Halloween.

The video starts off chillingly, with music and footage from the original movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis. Wells dressed up as the villain Michael Myers for his proposal, black coveralls, faceless mask, and all. He wanted the whole thing to go down on the same Los Angeles street where the movie was taped, and to get Canipe there, he arranged for her to go on a tour of Halloween's filming locations, according to the YouTube video description.

The whole thing worked out, and as the video shows, it definitely gave Canipe a scare. When she sees her dressed-up boyfriend appear from around a corner, she screams and covers her mouth. Prodded on by her tour guide, though, she goes up to the corner and sees that the unmasked character is actually her boyfriend, which makes her cry — a little bit out of relief, and a little bit out of excitement, we're guessing.

At the end of the video, the newly-engaged couple poses for some photos — hilariously, a few of them are taken as Wells wears the Michael Myers mask.

In case the ruse seems creepy, rather than romantic, it actually has meaning for the couple. According to Entertainment Weekly, Canipe hosts a podcast called Boys & Ghouls and loves scary movies; she referred to the proposal as "perfect" in an Imgur post. And as a thank-you to her new fiancé, she let him choose the theme of their engagement photos. His pick? Another classic movie, Back to the Future! The result, which she also shared on Imgur, is absolutely epic.
