Why This Wedding Photo Is Going Viral

Wedding Photography

No one wants to fall on a wedding day. Not the photographer, nor the bride, nor anyone else. But when Mississippi-based wedding photographer Chase Richardson slipped and fell while snapping Kristina and Will Moore's nuptials last June, which could have led to a bad picture, he managed to avoid a bad photo, an injury, or worse. Instead, he surreptitiously captured a reaction shot of the bridal party watching in shock as he dropped to the floor. The result? A clear, priceless photograph that's since gone viral.

"When it came time to take the wedding party photos, the rain had subsided, but everything was wet," he told The Huffington Post of the rainy wedding day at the McClain Lodge in Brandon, Mississippi, last year. "So I decided to shoot the wedding party under a covered patio that was basically a concrete slab. I was framing up the photo of the entire wedding party, and I took a step backwards and slipped in a puddle. It was all kind of a blur, but I hit the ground, broke the lens I was using and cut my finger open. Embarrassing! I shot the rest of the wedding with a very noisy, broken lens and a bleeding finger."

He didn't uncover the resulting photo until a year later, after which he shared it on Reddit and Twitter as a #weddingfail. The submission got noticed in a big way — since it was uploaded last month, it's gotten more than 8,500 upvotes on Reddit and the attention of Jimmy Fallon. Richardson tweeted it at Fallon, who then featured it on The Tonight Show.
