How to Throw an Incredible Long Wedding Weekend

Etiquette, Planning Tips

Long gone are the days when a wedding is just a one-day event. With guests increasingly spread out, often, weddings turn into a long weekend of parties. Whether it's a destination wedding or you both grew up in different parts of the country and settled somewhere in between, it's very possible that your big day will include a lot of out-of-towners. Enter: The Wedding Weekend. Here, some tips for hosting long-distance guests and putting on a weekend full of fun events.

Since many of your guests will likely be arriving from different parts of the country, add in time in your planning schedule to sketch out a rough outline of some pre-wedding events. Make sure this plan includes all age groups (especially if you're choosing to include children). If where you're choosing to get married is expensive, see if any close friends or family in the area are willing to host people and parties. You should also, of course, reserve a hotel block as you would for a destination wedding once you get a rough number of who will be attending from out of town.

When you send out your save-the-date you'll also want to include some sort of announcement of the events surrounding your big celebration. Then, when you send out the invitations, include a rough schedule of activities so guests can plan accordingly.

It's important to also think of some welcoming touches to show your appreciation for your guests's travel such as having people greet guests at the airport and hotel, providing transportation to and from the events, and having welcome baskets waiting for them at their rooms. Also try to attend every event — you don't have to stay the entire time but it will give the guests that traveled far some more opportunities to spend time with you.
