Planning your destination wedding abroad can be challenging, especially when it comes to figuring out the more delicate planning aspects like your wedding flowers. Not only do you have to take the local climate into consideration, but you also need to look into the country's laws and regulations for agricultural imports (tulips in the Caribbean? Forget about it!).
To help you plan the perfect floral fête abroad, we tapped the experts at Celebrations Ltd., a production house that plans, produces, and designs hundreds of luxury destination weddings in the Cayman Islands every year. Here, they share their top tips for bringing your wedding flower ideas to life — from thousands of miles away.
1. Do your research
It's important to remember that not all flowers are available all year round. Research prior and be sure to ask your planner or florist for recommendations on what blooms will be in season for your wedding.
2. Shop seasonally
Flowers are in the best condition (and cost) during the peak of their blooming season, so make note when deciding on your wedding date.
3. Choose weather-friendly blooms
Stick with blooms that will keep their shape under extreme weather predicaments like humidity or high temps. Opt for resilient flowers like orchids, birds of paradise, lilies and even roses for your beachside nuptials. For optimal freshness, keep flowers under cool temps (and out of the hot sun!) before wedding prep.
4. Be mindful of local agricultural laws
Commercial production of flowers in the Caribbean is near non-existent due to the heat — an important point to keep in mind when planning your destination wedding. Most islands have strict agricultural laws in place that restrict flower imports, so be sure to research what blooms you can expect to find in your chosen area.
5. Think outside the box
Having a destination wedding means that you'll have access to the country's unique offering of flowers and décor. You'll find that the other destinations offer a trove of native exotic blooms — a one-of-kind selection for your far-flung nuptials — so it's time to get creative with your blooms!
