Two West Coasters' Wine-Themed Bash in Newport, Rhode Island

Real Weddings

You've heard of a spark igniting across a room, but how about across a kickball field? When Erin joined a kickball league in fall 2007, all she knew about Sean was that he was supposed to be on the team — but he never showed up. Needless to say, she was intrigued, and when he finally made an appearance at their last game of the season, they had an immediate connection. The two bonded over their shared love of wine, and, after moving to Seattle for Sean's job in 2010, passed the rainy winters in wine bars and wineries.

It's only fitting, then, that Sean proposed after a long day of wine tasting in April 2013. At their September 2014 wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, the two infused their oeniphile spirits into every second, from a merlot-themed color palette to an expertly curated wine list. Check out Snap! Weddings photos of their gorgeous affair, planned by Couture Parties, below!

A close friend designed a logo that Erin and Sean used throughout their wedding décor, from their invitations to their escort-card holder.

After her mother-in-law encouraged her to try on a dress she didn't think she'd love, Erin went for a lace gown with a cascading organdy skirt; even as she went to other stores and tried on different gowns, she couldn't get the Paloma Blanca design out of her mind. It ended up being the perfect choice for her classic wedding! She paired the gown with cobalt blue Kate Spade shoes, and gifted Sean a pair of blue socks to match.

Erin and Sean brought their love of wine to their simple, sustainably-decorated ceremony: two large wine barrels served as planters for flower arrangements, and the two used a favorite wine called Opus One — like Erin and Sean, its makers bridged differences between them with wine—for a wine box ceremony.

For their classic tented reception at Newport's Castle Hill Inn, the couple kept décor minimalist, sticking to a color palette of Granny Smith green, merlot, and gray. Wine barrels and boxes were used throughout, to house cocktails and desserts. Their planner, Stephanie of Couture Parties, even used corks to hold the escort cards!

Just before dinner, Sean surprised Erin with a performance by Irish Step dancers, a nod to her Irish heritage.

Before cutting into their cake, a modern twist on Strawberry Shortcake, Erin and Sean stepped out into the rainy night to watch their party from afar. "I don't remember anyone explicitly telling us how it would feel to look around the room and see so many of our worlds collide in such a magical way," Erin says. The West Coasters said their Eastern destination bash felt like a honeymoon in itself, but they took some time in Bend, Oregon after saying "I Do" to celebrate.
