WATCH: Sam Smith's New Video for "Lay Me Down" Features a Beautiful Gay Wedding

Celebrity, Gay Marriage

Sam Smith's "Lay Me Down" is one of the most moving love songs from his Grammy-nominated debut album In the Lonely Hour. And the just-released music video for the song makes the tune's heartfelt melody that much more of a tearjerker.

Opening with a funeral, Smith's lyrics "Yes, I do, I believe/That one day I will be where I was/Right there, right next to you/And it's hard, the days just seem so dark/The moon, the stars are nothing without you," come hauntingly to life. A torn-up Smith, knelt in front of a casket, begs the camera to let him lay down by his love's side. All of this would be almost too much to bear if it weren't for the sweet flashback of the couple's wedding, a glimpse of joy into their relationship.

Panning out of the church, the film's setting remains in the pew, but now, it's much lighter with a smirk-laden Smith singing the lyrics as vows to his future husband, while a crowd dressed in white cheers the two men on and throws confetti down the altar.

Though the video ends on a sad note, we'd like to focus on the beautifully portrayed gay wedding, and the joy its portrayal brings.

Smith posted the video on Facebook, along with a note about the video: "Dear All, Here is the Link to the LAY ME DOWN music video. This song holds a very dear place in my heart. With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in. This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country. I hope you enjoy it. I love you all x," Smith captioned the clip.
