We've said it before and we'll say it again: Thank-you notes are an absolute must for all wedding-related gifts. (Yes, that includes your engagement party, bridal shower, bachelorette party, and the big day itself.) In a day and age where email and text messages are the norm, it's important to still carve out the time to graciously thank your guests the old fashioned way. Even if you don't love the gift, or if you received multiples of the same thing, you're obligated to send a thoughtful note that shows you appreciate their generosity. Here, our etiquette expert shares how to write a thank-you note for a gift you plan on returning.

When it comes to wedding gifts, there's a good chance you'll get multiples of at least one item or receive something that wasn't on your registry that you just don't need or want. But no matter what the case, it's essential you still send a thoughtful thank-you note.

As with all thank-you notes, be sure to personalize your message with a clear reference to what your friend or relatively gave you and your fiancé. Tell them how much you appreciate the thoughtful gesture and what it meant to you both to have them there on your wedding day. The more specific you can get with the details, the better. If you shared a hilarious dance that evening or if they sent over a beautiful card with their gift, be sure to note it. Not only will it show your appreciation, it makes up for the space you're not filling with how much you love their gift and how you're planning to use it.

Whatever you do, don't make mention of the return. Regardless of how you feel about the item, remember that someone spent time and money picking out something they thought you'd love, so take the time to truly thank them for their generosity. In the end, as long as your note is sincere, you've done everything right!
