One Couple's Intimate Destination Wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Real Weddings

During a long hike on Mount Rainier in Seattle, Daisy Montfort, 32, and Justin Spooler, 33, stopped at the top of a waterfall to take in the sweeping views. Justin turned to Daisy, asking if it was worth the climb. As Daisy explained how beautiful the scene was Justin added, "I have something that will make it even better." He got down on one knee with a box from Tiffany & Co. and asked her to be his wife. "We both shed a few tears," Daisy says.

A year later, on July 26, 2014, the pair exchanged vows during a private ceremony in front of just 37 guests on the beach at Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas. "The country is so special to me. I grew up spending vacations in Mexico with my family and fell in love with it," says the bride.

Daisy chose an understated column gown with a deep V in the back. The silk Vera Wang number featured a short train and lace cap sleeves. "It was perfect for a beach wedding — comfortable, elegant and easy to dance in," she says. The bride paired her gown with an extra-special accessory: her great-grandmother's Art Deco ring. "She gave it to me before she passed away. It made me feel like I had my father's family by my side."

The modern couple bucked tradition, choosing to get ready for the ceremony together. "It was so nice having that time together before the ceremony," she says. Justin wore a laid-back white linen suit from H&M and a yellow boutonniere that matched Daisy's King Protea and ranunculus bouquet.

With so few guests, Justin and Daisy decided to skip the wedding party. They walked down the aisle together as a Mariachi band played, then exchanged vows in a short-and-sweet ceremony.

"We were legally married in the courthouse back in the U.S., and neither of us is religious, so that helped keep the ceremony on the quicker side," Daisy says. "We kissed, then it was off to cocktail hour with the Mariachi band in the lead!"

Dinner took place at one long king's table covered in a sunny table runner, vibrant rose and ranunculus arrangements, and flickering candles. After the meal, Justin and Daisy shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra's "I've Got You Under My Skin."

To contrast their bright and bold palette, the couple chose a simple, three-tiered cake slathered in buttercream and garnished with succulents.

In the weeks after their wedding, the newlyweds bought a house together, have welcomed a puppy named Nico to their family and are planning to jet off to Japan for their honeymoon. Looking back at their day, Justin and Daisy say they have only a single piece of advice: "Don't produce your own wedding. Hire a planner — it's worth every penny."
