Narrowing down your wedding guest list is a tough task. It can be even tougher if you're considering inviting people from your past. Case in point: You may not want to invite your ex to your wedding, but what if you want to invite your ex's parents? Is that a line you shouldn't cross, or should you go ahead and ask them to come celebrate your upcoming union? Our etiquette experts weigh in on this touchy subject.
First, you must talk to your fiancé about this. It's his day too, so if he doesn't feel comfortable with your former flame's family attending your big day, then you should not invite them. If you get your guy's seal of approval, then you need to really think about the relationship you have with your ex's family: Are these people who love and support your new relationship? Do you talk to them all the time? Or do you only stay in communication via Facebook messages or Instagram? If it's the latter, you may want to reconsider extending an invite. You also have to think about your ex. Do you think he would want his family at your wedding?
Whatever you decide, make sure you have open communication with your fiancé about the situation. Overall, you want to make sure everyone — especially you and your guy — feel comfortable the entire night. If you have the least bit of worry that it will be awkward, chances are it will be.
