One Couple's Vibrant Hindu Wedding in Los Angeles

California, Local, Real Weddings

Ashley Singh wanted to honor her heritage by throwing a Hindu bash — with a twist. "Indian weddings are usually over-the-top glam. We went for charming and romantic," she says of her wedding to Donnie Misino. So they mixed in some of his Italian-American heritage, choosing a Mediterranean-inspired venue near Los Angeles and bathing the room in candlelight. But they made sure to hold on to the texture and details, draping a vintage screen with sari fabric and treating guests to a performance by bhangra dancers.

Ashley, a graphic designer, designed the invitations herself. "I loved adding that extra personal touch," she says. Her bejeweled sandals were a perfect match for her ombre attire, though they did cause a slight hiccup during the ceremony. "I had to remove them at the end of the aisle for our ceremony, and they were harder to get off than I anticipated," remembers Ashley.

Silk, velvet, crystals, and beads covered the bride's fuchsia-and-purple ensemble, and she followed that hue through to her makeup and shimmering jewelry.

The ceremony took place beneath a turquoise-and-gold mandap, or altar, decorated with clusters of vibrant flowers.

"We made sure to hire a priest who could explain the traditions to Donnie's family," Ashley says. The couple stuck to Hindu tradition — aside from a surprise from Donnie. "In Hindu weddings, there isn't a ring exchange. But he surprised me with a wedding band!" says the bride.

Guests headed outside for cocktails as the space was transformed for the reception, then came back to find vibrant turquoise and purple hues washed over the room. Outside, sequined pillows and ornate lanterns created a vintage-meets-Indian vibe.

"We spent the two years before the wedding collecting votive holders, lanterns, and pillows to add an Indian vibe," says Ashley. "It ended up being cheaper than renting it all!"

White buttercream covered a colorful surprise: a guava, lime, and passion fruit cake from King's Hawaiian Bakery! The couple's florist used silk fabrics and orchids to add some extra detail.

At the end of the night, guests waved sparklers as the newlyweds made their way to the getaway car. "They made for a fun memory — and fantastic photos!" says Ashley.
