What to Do if You and Your Fiancé Can't Agree on a First Dance Song

Music, Planning Tips

Although choosing your first dance song seems like it would be easy, it can be a surprisingly tough wedding task. It can be a little nerve-wracking knowing that whatever tune you and your fiancé choose will be "your song" 'til death do you part. But what if you love country and your guy loves hip hop? You can barely agree on what song to listen to in the car — no less the one you both will dance to as husband and wife! Here's what to do if you find yourself in this predicament.

To start, you and your fiancé should make separate lists of dream first-dance songs. After making the list, look for any overlapping genres. Do both of you have a few classic rock songs on your respective lists? What about the same artist? Once you find a common theme, make a new joint list that features songs both of you like. From there, decide together which tune speaks to your relationship. It should have meaning not only to you, but to him as well.

If you can't decide on one song, who says you need to? Mashing up two songs has become more popular at wedding receptions. So — if it works — try combining both of your songs into one and creating some type of choreography to it. Your guests will love it!
