Even as many couples veer away from serving a traditional wedding cake during their reception (hello, cupcakes, donuts, and other sweet treats!), the cake-cutting tradition is still one of the most iconic moments of any wedding day. Some such couples even choose to have a small, one-tier cake just to be able to cut it! Naturally, the cake-cutting is always accompanied by a sweet song, so we made a playlist to help you choose the perfect tune!

Some of the most popular cake-cutting songs are, naturally, about sugar. James Taylor's "How Sweet it is to be Loved by You" is one of the all-time most popular selections, while Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and The Archies' "Sugar Sugar" are high up there, as well. Other common choices are just playful love songs (an upbeat choice is good, as you'll probably end up with cake in your hair or on your face!). We love Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound," Queen's "You're My Best Friend," and Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" for this very reason. And for something truly on the nose? Go for Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." Too accurate, right?!

We have these greats, as well as many others, on our specially curated Spotify playlist, below. Give it a listen and see if you find the one for you!

P.S. The cake-cutting traditionally happens after the first dance, roughly near the middle or end of the reception. And why do the bride and groom smash cake in each others' faces? Originally, the groom broke the cake over his bride's head! As cakes got bigger, that custom ended, and the bride was expected to cut the cake and serve it to guests alone. Now, the groom is supposed to "help" the bride, making the cake-cutting the symbolic first act they do as a married couple.
