The appeal of Hawaii is simple: white sand beaches, clear blue water, towering palm trees, all without leaving the good ol' U.S.A. Bonus: these islands have a personality all their own, and plenty of culture to explore when you're not relaxing by the shore. Here are five things that are simply the best in the Hawaiian islands.

1. Leis
Many resorts welcome honeymooners with floral leis, but if yours doesn't consider ordering a pair for your arrival. Nothing says "aloha" like the fragrant scent of the local flowers.

2. Luaus
Consider this your first class in Hawaii 101. These dinner include the iconic foods of the islands, including lomilomi salmon, kalua pork cooked in an imu (an underground oven), haupia (a sweet coconut pudding), taro rolls, tuna poke (sure to be a hit with any sushi lover), and poi — which is an, um, acquired taste. Not that we're judging. It's all served up with elaborate performances, which might include dancers, fire eaters, and even story tellers.

3. Hula Dancing
Learn to shake your hips at a variety of classes around the islands, and you'll take home a skill that will always remind you of your honeymoon.

4. Mai Tais
These fruity drinks sometimes come with little paper umbrellas and — in the best case scenarios — are served in playful tiki glasses that are sure to make it to your Instagram feed.

5. Surfing
If the two of you have any athletic ability at all, consider taking surfing classes while you're on the isle. The good news: Yoga classes teach balance, so if you've been making it to your local gym on a regular basis for a dose of "namaste" you may just be ahead of the curve. And, even if you struggle to stand up and ride the board into shore just once, it'll be a day you never forget. Plus, Hawaiian surf culture comes with its own hand signs and language, so you're sure to learn a lot even if you're not a natural ... and, best of all, wipeout pictures are almost always funny.
