As Carolyn Bryla and Chase Hord scoped out the foundation or the home they were building in Houston, Texas, Chase asked her to show him where the front door would be. As she walked him to the door, he dropped to one knee and asked her to begin a life with him. "I was stunned!" Carolyn recalls.
For their July 9, 2013 destination wedding, Carolyn and Chase envisioned an "elegant yet rustic Hawaiian-feeling wedding," says the bride. "No cliché Hawaiian prints, but rather lush, tropical colors and textures." With a team including Lena Sebag of Belle Destination Events and Tamiz Photography there to prepare and capture every detail, the couple threw a coral and fuchsia fête their 40 guests won't soon forget!
The bride designed the couple's postcard-inspired save-the-dates and classic invitations, using a magenta floral flocked paper as her inspiration. "I felt crazy at times for taking on the project, but we loved the final results!" she says.
Carolyn's Legends by Romona Keveza gown featured a sweetheart neckline and head-to-toe ivory lace. "But what really sold me on my dress was the fact that the lace felt tropical, and when I tried it on it fit like a million bucks," explains Carolyn. "It was as though the dress had been designed for my figure." The bride kept comfortable by slipping on a pair of glittering Chanel flats topped with roses. "My mom found them while shopping and demanded that I drop everything to go try them on that instant," recalls Carolyn. "It's a good thing I listened, because there was only one pair left — which just happened to be my size!"
Bella Bloom Floral Boutique mixed king protea, garden roses, seeded eucalyptus, scabiosa pods and ranunculus to create Carolyn's bright, lush bouquet.
Chase wore a tan linen suit and crisp white shirt paired with brown leather loafers. The bride and groom both accented their get-ups with Hawaiian wedding accouterments, she with flowers in her hair and he with a garland of greenery.
Wooden signs directed guests to the couple's outdoor ceremony, cocktail hour and reception, held at Sugarman Estate at Honua Kai Lani in Maui.
A ukulele player strummed "Marry Me" by Train as Carolyn's father walked her down a grass aisle lined with pots of bougainvillea and a delicate trail of rose petals. Chase waited for her beneath the driftwood altar, festooned with the fuchsia blooms and studded with proteas and roses. During the ceremony, officiated by a native Hawaiian reverend, Carolyn and Chase exchanged leis and blew a conch to conclude the service.
The bride's sister served as her only bridesmaid, wearing a guava-hued gown by Amsale. "The chiffon was perfect for a seaside wedding," says Carolyn.
Guests kicked off the cocktail hour with a selection of signature cocktails, including a tropical mojito, an Old Hawaiian and a drink called "Passion Love."
Wooden tables were dressed up with iron chairs and centerpieces of roses, proteas, and ranunculus in vintage wood boxes.
The couple's three-tier strawberries and cream cake featured a trail of fresh blooms and succulents down the side. "I had a groom's cake made for Chase as a surprise. It was topped with model of his Harley Davidson with us, modeled in fondant, riding it," says Carolyn.
Guests relaxed in a lounge area filled with ivory sofas and a wooden backdrop, or joined the couple on the dance floor, where laid-back tunes by the Beach Boys and Bob Marley kept the mood relaxed.
"My favorite moment, besides getting my marry the man of my dreams of course, was seeing everything together and set up for the first time," says Carolyn. "I couldn't believe I was so lucky to get such a beautiful wedding. It took my breath away."
