The fashion world lost a legend last night. Famed designer and purveyor of all that's elegant, Oscar de la Renta succumbed to his nearly eight-year-long battle with cancer at age 82. Originally from the Dominican Republic, de la Renta started his career in fashion at the age of 19 when he worked under the tutelage of the great Cristóbal Balenciaga in Spain. After a year, he left to work at Christian Dior's studio in Paris, but was offered more money by designer Antonio del Castillo and continued to finesse his craft at Lanvin. According to The New York Times, before beginning his post at the famed Parisian design house, he went to fashion school and asked the woman in charge to teach him a year-long course in just two weeks.

After a few years in France, de la Renta headed to United States where he would soon make his mark designing for houses like Elizabeth Arden. It wasn't long before he established his own ready-to-wear line in 1965, and then began designing for First Ladies like Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. The rest, as they say, is history. The designer made a major impact, creating utterly feminine and beautiful looks for socialites, political powerhouses, and celebrities on the red carpet.

While he was a red-carpet favorite, he was a true superstar in the wedding world. With mottos like, "I design clothes for women to wear. I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes," and "Walk like you have three men walking behind you," it's no wonder he continued to elevate brides to their absolute best self in his work. His bridal gowns boasted delicate embellishments and silhouettes that would leave a room silent. Most recently, he designed Amal Alamuddin's off-the-shoulder dress, which she wore to marry George Clooney. His wedding dress collections were never short of his signature, sophisticated aesthetic.

In honor of the great Oscar de la Renta, we remember him with a few of his best bridal designs.
