Now that the immediate excitement surrounding tennis legend Martina Navratilova's proposal at the U.S. Open on Saturday has died down, she's opening up about her decision to pop the question in such a public manner.

"Originally it wasn't the idea to do it at the U.S. Open, on the Jumbotron and all that, but then it was, 'Why not? I've seen it in movies!'" Navratilova told People of the moment, which was telecast live during the tennis championships at New York's Arthur Ashe stadium. "And it all came off, everything worked out perfectly!"

Not only did her longtime girlfriend Julia Lemigova accept her proposal, but they've been riding a wave of joy ever since. "What's been amazing is the outpouring of support from everywhere, including when I was walking through the stadium afterwards with people saying, 'Congratulations,' people on the street saying, 'Congratulations,' and the Twitter outpouring has been unbelievably supportive," Navratilova added.

"The changes in people's attitudes [on gay marriage] is amazing," she said. "You put it out to the world and it already feels like we're married because the whole world knows."

For Navratilova and Lemigova, a former Miss USSR, the proposal capped off a joyous time in the place where Navratilova has won plenty of games. And the tennis pro is happy to gush about her newly-minted fiancée. "She's just a special human being inside and out. [I love] her dimples when she smiles. She's got a honey voice and a honey personality. We've come from similar backgrounds and experiences in life and we've both overcome a lot. We both dreamt big and we both made it, so it's pretty cool!"

The couple hopes to marry in their home state of Florida, where gay marriage may soon be legal.
