Surprise celebrity weddings

What do Blake Lively and Leighton Meester have in common — besides being former Gossip Girl co-stars? They both successfully got married under the radar, despite their high-profiles. Without anyone knowing and with zero fanfare, they tied the knot in intimate, personalized events that belie their big-time fame.

As Kelly Rowland's recent nuptials prove, celebs are planning surprise weddings like clockwork these days. We've already told you how to throw a secret ceremony and reception like a celebrity, but which stars held the most shocking and unexpected nuptials in recent memory? Below, find eight high-profile couples that managed to say "I do" without anyone catching on, in order from the least to most surprising.

8. Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock
Though the singer and her now-husband Brandon Blackstock originally planned a blowout wedding, she announced last August that they'd scrapped their plans in favor of an elopement. "Our whole life is a celebration," she explained. "That's what we kept laughing about. We don't need another day where we throw a big party. Our lives are so in the spotlight all the time. Everything is such a spectacle, we were like, 'We would rather have an intimate moment that's special.'" Just two months later, Clarkson tweeted that she and Blackstock tied the knot at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee, with just Blackstock's two children in attendance. Although she'd kept the exact wedding date and details under wraps, the actual event wasn't a major surprise: She'd previously said that she wanted to get married before Christmas. Mission accomplished!

7. Beyoncé and Jay Z
The ultimate musical power couple recently celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary on April 4, which reminded us of their covert nuptials. No one had suspected an imminent wedding until the "Drunk in Love" couple was spotted picking up their marriage license in New York. After that, the April 4 date was immediately assumed, as they were both born on the fourth of a month. All signs pointed to an official union, but it took six months for Beyoncé to address it in public. In a September 2008 interview with Essence magazine, she shyly discussed her small and intimate wedding, for which the couple flew in 70,000 white orchids from Thailand. Props for keeping mum, but the real surprise was how long they avoided mentioning it.

6. Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard
By the time Bell and longtime fiancé Dax Shepard finally got married in October 2013, it was more of a shock that they'd actually gone through with it — and how they did it. Engaged since late 2009, the duo famously waited to get married until same-sex couples could, as well. "I don't feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that's denied to my [gay and lesbian] friends," Bell said in August 2012. "It's just kind of rude to invite everyone to a party for a rite not everyone can hold." And after Bell "re-proposed" in June after the Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, we assumed a celebrity-filled soiree was in the works. But Bell and Shepard instead exchanged vows at the Beverly Hills County Clerk's Office on the fly. They'd gone to the office just to obtain a marriage license, but then took up a court employee's offer to marry them on the spot in a nearby courtroom. Perhaps this one was as much of a surprise to them as it was to us, in the end. Either way, it came completely from out of the blue.

Kelly Rowland is engaged to Tim Witherspoon

5. Kelly Rowland and Tim Witherspoon
With this former Destiny's Child, surprise is the norm. Her engagement to her manager and boyfriend Tim Witherspoon was rumored for months before she confirmed it last November. So when we heard whispers that she and Witherspoon discreetly got married on May 9, we weren't terribly shocked — though we were impressed! There was no indication that she'd be getting married anytime soon, making it a skillful surprise. Her undercover wedding in Costa Rica was attended by Beyoncé and Solange Knowles, and yet it wasn't confirmed until nearly a week later. She'd been so tight-lipped about her wedding plans that the event was quite unexpected. Bravo, Kelly!

4. Leighton Meester and Adam Brody
Millennials everywhere flipped out when Meester and Brody, the former stars of Gossip Girl and The OC, respectively, announced their engagement just 10 months after they started dating. An intensely private couple, they were rarely seen together, which only added to their mystique. A mere three months after they got engaged, the comely couple got married in a super-discreet ceremony in February. With only a mere "yes" from Brody to confirm his marriage and a to-die-for close-up photo of Meester's engagement and wedding rings, we know one thing for sure about this otherwise under-wraps marriage: They're masters at keeping secrets.

Stacy Keibler and Jared Pobre are married

3. Stacy Keibler and Jared Pobre
Soon-to-be parents Keibler and Pobre had a March wedding that was totally unexpected for a number of reasons. Fresh off her high-profile romance with George Clooney, her ensuing relationship with Pobre in fall 2013 was so much more low-key that many forgot she'd moved on. It helps that Pobre, a tech CEO that Keibler had been friends with for years, was a non-celeb, which cooled the rampant wedding talk that surrounded Keibler and Clooney. Additionally, the wedding was a surprise to even Keibler and Pobre's families — they announced their plans to marry during the plane ride to what everyone thought was a joint family vacation. All of those factors added up to a true bombshell once the news broke.

2. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
We knew that the Green Lantern co-stars were dating, but their engagement was such a secret that Lively didn't wear her 7-karat light pink oval diamond engagement ring in public until after their shocking September 2012 wedding. They managed to keep all details of their romantic nuptials at Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, quiet as they planned the soiree. Maybe it's because they're both so beautiful, or maybe it's the allure of keeping a wedding secret, but something about this wedding still feels like a fresh surprise.

1. Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha
And, finally, the real master of secrecy. Not only was it major news that the Scandal star married NFL player Asomugha when it was confirmed last July, but they'd already been married for two weeks at that point! Plus, few people knew she was even dating her beau of several years — they've never made a public appearance together. The whole thing was almost too much to handle. She eventually stepped out wearing her wedding ring and later had a very public pregnancy, but how she managed to keep her relationship and wedding private for so long is still a mystery.
