It took fourteen years for Kerieda and Kendell to get from "Nice to meet you" to "I do." The couple, who met on campus at Hampton University, immediately bonded over their New York roots, something that has remained a constant theme. In 2011, Kendell took Kerieda out on the town, donning his favorite suit and hiring a car to bring his soon-to-be fiancée to an intimate dinner with city views. As the meal came to an end, dessert arrived, with sparklers and writing on the plate reading "Will you marry me?". "The restaurant burst into applause," remembers Kerieda. "It seems like everyone knew what was going to happen. It was the best!"
The couple kept their wedding close to home, choosing to marry in Harlem's Riverside Church before heading to The Green Building in Brooklyn for a romantic reception. Le Image Inc. captured the beautiful day on film, made possible with help from Michelle Newson of Onederland Events. "We were able to bring our wedding wonderland to life," says Kerieda.
Soft, romantic hair showed off the lace bodice of Kerieda's wedding gown. A pair of blush ruffled Badgley Mischka sandals matched the bride's bouquet.
"I carried pink roses to add some color to my look," says Kerieda. She kept the flowers sweet and simple so as not to distract from the gorgeous ceremony setting.
Kerieda's two junior bridesmaids wore flowing trapeze dresses and white flowers in their hair.
The bridesmaids wore blush satin cocktail dresses with a ruffle at the waist, paired with gold drop earrings and strappy nude sandals. "It was so pretty, but no-frills," says the bride.
Kerieda has driven past Riverside Church a hundred times, and always imagined her wedding there. She chose the church's Christ Chapel for the intimate, warm feeling of the space.
Ceremony décor was kept simple so it wouldn't distract from the chapel's beauty. Small pomanders of white roses tied with blush ribbon hung along the aisle. At the couple's traditional ceremony, Kerieda was escorted down the aisle by her father. A cousin read a poem before Kendell and Kerieda exchanged vows.
Table assignments were written on an oversized chalk board. The lace and rose motifs matched the design on the invitations and ceremony programs. Kerieda's flower girls, her twin nieces, wore floor-length chiffon dresses that the bride found on Etsy. "I was an Etsy maniac!"
Long tables and warm candlelight created an intimate vibe. "We wanted guests to feel like they were having dinner at the family dining table," says Kerieda.
Pin-tucked ivory linens gave the table some texture. Low centerpieces of ivory-and-blush roses were surrounded by a mixture of votive and pillar candles. Guests dined on a classic menu of roasted chicken and skirt steak. The meal was paired with a traditional rum punch. "We wanted to celebrate our Caribbean roots," says the bride.
Kerieda's cousin helped put together the candy table, featuring the couple's favorite sweets.
The simple white cake, topped with fresh blush roses, held layers of red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting.
"Choosing a venue with great character made planning our wedding so easy," says Kerieda of The Green Building in Brooklyn. "It was warm and comfortable, perfect for our celebration."
Adjusting to married life has been a breeze for the couple. "We still text each other saying 'You're my husband...Eek!' and 'OMG you're my wife!', even months later," says Kerieda. And the bride knows none of this would have been possible without the help of her wedding planner. "Michelle was amazing. She kept us on-budget, organized the day with ease, and made sure we had a great time during the process. If you can have someone who's not a family member or wedding guest taking care of things that day, do it!"
