While all signs pointed to the apocalypse, Cam and Mitchell finally tied the knot in the season five finale of Modern Family, which aired last night. And, in true Modern Family fashion, it wasn't an easy ride to get there. Here's a quick recap:
Due to a fast-approaching wildfire, the longtime partners had to evacuate their outdoor venue. Pepper (played by Nathan Lane), Cam and Mitch's close friend-slash-wedding planner, begs the firefighters to let them hold the ceremony — and almost succeeds! — until the couple's officiant and gal pal Sal's (played by Elizabeth Banks) water breaks.
Phil (almost) comes to the rescue when he gets ordained online. But while practicing his speech in front of wife Claire, she slips in to the tub and soaks her bridesmaid dress. In other wardrobe mishaps, Cam needs to pick up his tux from the dry cleaners, which are tragically closed. Thanks to a laundry chute and daughter Lily's small frame, she manages to save the day.
Then, Cam believes their marriage isn't meant to be and that the apocalypse is upon them. Here's why: The sky turned dark (because of the wildfire), Sal's water breaking symbolized a flood, a swarm of Lucases (the name of the family whose wedding venue Cam and Mitchell crashed in an attempt to find a new place to say "I do"), and the "Four Hoarse Men" approached (four guests, including planner Pepper, lost their voices).
After nearly everything goes wrong, Mitch's dad Jay steps up. He gets his country club to allow the couple to wed on the golf course, which has a special significance since he was nervous about telling his golf buddies that his son was having a same-sex marriage.
It was a tear-jerking moment, but it still featured the show's signature humor throughout it. Watch the clips above, and see how true love conquers all — even when your wedding is thrown into a tailspin from natural disasters and more!
