A Colorful Industrial-Chic Wedding in Sydney, Australia

Real Weddings

The wedding of Rebecca Brincat, 36, and Benjamin McCallum, 29, was truly an international affair. The bride and groom both grew up in Australia (she in Melbourne, he in South Australia), they met in London, moved to New York City together, and got engaged in Paris's Place Des Vosges. "Ben proposed where he'd first told me he loved me 3 years earlier," remembers Rebecca.

The couple decided to return to their native country for their wedding, but wanted to bring a bit of New York with them, so they chose a venue that was at the same time casual and glamorous. "Ben is a coffee addict, so a venue with amazing food and coffee was a must," Rebecca says. "And we loved having the outdoor space!" The couple wed at The Grounds in Alexandria, New South Whales, on December 21st, 2013, photographed by Gold Hat Photography.

Though Rebecca had already purchased a wedding dress in New York City, a few months before the wedding, she changed her mind. "I went on a mad hunt for a new dress with three months to go," she says. She found a sequined Karen Willis Holmes dress with a simple silhouette. "The sparkle (and my gold Badgley Mischka pumps!) made it glamorous."

The bride's playful bouquet featured white roses, gardenias, and yellow billy balls, as well as fragrant rosemary, thyme, and sage.

Pastel bow ties added a pop of color to Ben's gray suit and his groomsmen's black ones.

"We'd hoped Frank, our cocker spaniel, would make an appearance at the wedding," says Rebecca. "Unfortunately he'd double-booked himself, but he looked quite dapper in his yellow bow tie!" Frank joined Ben and his groomsmen for photos before the ceremony.

Ben and Rebecca chose The Grounds for its industrial-chic vibe. "It reminded us of New York, where we lived together before moving back to Australia," says Rebecca.

The open-air ceremony was simply decorated, with hanging bunches of baby's breath and café lighting. Rebecca's mother walked her down the aisle to "That's When I Knew" by Alicia Keys.

For the non-traditional ceremony, the friend who'd initially introduced the couple served as the ring bearer. Three friends did readings before the couple exchanged vows.

"Nobody could believe that our officiant hadn't known us for years," says Rebecca. "She was so engaging and funny, and really captured who we are." The ceremony was punctuated by occasional baa-ing from The Grounds' resident sheep, Bradley Cooper.

The ceremony took place at four long tables at The Grounds. "A huge part of why we picked the venue was for their amazing food," says Rebecca.

Tables were named after London (where the couple met), Paris (where they got engaged, New York (where they'd lived), and Sydney (where they were married). Arrangements of colorful flowers, including peonies, billy balls, and fresh herbs, were lit with votive candles in mason jars.

Place cards were tied to rainbow lollipops. "We wanted to add whimsical spin," says the bride.

The couple skipped wedding cake in favor of a selection of sweets from The Grounds. "The Nutella and jam bombolini were definitely the highlight," Rebecca reveals, though guests also adored the lemon meringue pie and miniature chocolate pavlovas.

With a honeymoon to Turkey on the calendar for July of 2014, Ben and Rebecca still have a lot to look forward to. Looking back on her wedding day, Rebecca's advice is to enjoy wedding planning, and your wedding day, as much as possible. "Nothing will prepare you for all the love and support you feel on your wedding day," she says. Ben adds that it's also important to keep wedding planning from permeating every moment of your lives. "Schedule a time to talk about the wedding weekly," he says. "It will keep the process enjoyable."
