When planning their Atlanta wedding, Alicia and Lance knew they wanted something stylish and fashionable, with a Big City feel. So for their October 7th, 2012, nuptials, the couple went to the heart of Atlanta, choosing a top-floor venue with floor-to-ceiling windows and 360-degree views of downtown for their contemporary, glamorous event. "There was definitely a 'Sex in the City' vibe to it," Alicia says.
"We assembled a wedding dream team to pull all the details together," the bride continues. "They made the planning process totally seamless." An intimate candle-lit ceremony was followed by an elegant fall-hued reception—and one big surprise from Alicia for her groom.
Alicia needed a gorgeous gown fitting of the venue and theme, and she chose accessories to match. These Jimmy Choo d'Orsay pumps were the perfect sparkly footwear.
"I loved that my dress shimmered from head to toe," says Alicia. "I had amazing luck with my dress search. Not only was it my first trip to a bridal salon, it was the first dress I tried on!" Her Lazaro ball gown featured an embroidered bodice and a petal-strewn skirt covered in crystals. She added an ornate belt to up the glam factor even more.
"We met in the elevator at work," recalls Alicia, who accessorized her Lazaro gown with oversized shimmering earrings. "We both felt a connection, like we'd known each other forever even though we'd never met." Lance wore a classic tuxedo with an ivory dinner jacket.
The boutonniere and bouquet reflected the evening's modern theme. Lance wore an architectural orchid, while Alicia carried purple-throated Calla lilies accented with sparkling pins. "My bridesmaids each carried a single white rose," she says. "They placed them on the chair we reserved in memory of my mom."
The couple's ceremony was intimate and dramatic, with candles glowing all around the dark room. They ended the ceremony with a jump over a ribbon-wrapped broom.
The reception theme was "Cosmopolitan Chic," with wrought-iron candleholders towering over low bud vases with orange roses.
Layers of burnt orange and gold created an elegant fall-hued reception space.
"We named the tables after neighborhoods in Lance's hometown of New York," says Alicia. Textured black chargers and gold flatware gave the long table some extra glam, contrasting beautifully with the Southern menu of mac and cheese, shrimp and grits, and barbecue.
Lance and Alicia shared their first dance to Kem's "Share My Life" before getting down on the dance floor with their guests.
The four-tiered cake was covered in as much sparkle as it could handle, with layers of stripes, piped texture, and sleek quilting.
"Lance knew about the sparkler exit, but he was shocked when he saw the helicopter," says Alicia. "We felt like the King and Queen of Atlanta as we flew over the city!"
And while planning and celebrating their wedding was fun, Alicia's advice is to remember the marriage that will follow. "Make sure you're putting even more energy into establishing a stable marriage," she says. "The wedding is one day, but your marriage is forever."
