Real Proposal Story: A Fourth of July Engagement in California

Proposals

First comes love, then comes marriage. But before the joy of wedding planning begins comes the biggest, happiest question of all: Will you marry me? Thanks to HowHeAsked, we found some real, romantic, and ridiculously creative proposal stories that will get you inspired, tearing up, or both!

Ellie and Matt met in high school, in the way you only see in rom-coms or TV shows. "He was the 'bad boy' that every girl wanted to date, and I was the only girl that didn't fall for his bad boy act," Ellie recalls. Her lack of interest likely piqued his, and when they both wound up at the same party one night, they got to talking. Ellie finally figured out why every other girl liked him so much: he was attractive and a smooth talker. With every other girl's eyes locked onto her, Ellie asked for Matt's number.

"I figured, what can I lose?!" she says. "As soon as he left the party, he started texting me nonstop. That was seven years ago and I still get those butterflies every time I see him or hear his name."

How do high school sweethearts follow up on their star-crossed beginning? With a great vacation, for starters. "We decided to go to California for the Fourth of July because Matt's cousin was throwing a huge party on the beach. How do you say no to that?" Ellie says.

Once they were in California, they went for a stroll on the beach about 30 minutes before sunset. Ellie remembers it as the best walk on the beach of her life, partially because of what happened next.

"As we walked back up the stairs to the party I noticed everyone was staring at us smiling," Ellie says. Figuring that everyone had a few too many drinks, she brushed it off. But when they got to the top of the stairs, Matt said he forgot something. He grabbed Ellie's hand and started walking her to the deck that overlooked the sunset and beach.

"He was telling me how much he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I was freaking out, having no idea what was going on! He dropped to his knee and asked me to marry him in front of his entire family!"

With that, Ellie and Matt had an engagement, an unforgettable Fourth of July, and a built-in engagement party!

Our Takeaways

1. Make a trip out of it: Like many other couples, Matt used a planned get-away as a ruse to propose. What better way to ensure a great vacation than with a marriage proposal?

2. Mine a pre-planned event: Not only did Matt wisely propose while on a fun-filled vacation, he did it a cousin's party—the perfect way to unite friends and family to share in the happy news.

3. Celebrate on a holiday: In case you couldn't tell, we love the timing of this proposal—on a vacation, with a party, on the Fourth of July!

4. Backdrop, backdrop, backdrop: Ellie can't get that gorgeous sunset out of her head. Any chance it has to do with the fact that it's directly tied to her engagement? Of course! Matt's special sunset stroll and proposal helped create an indelible image.
