How to Get Gorgeous Eyes on Your Wedding Day

It's an old adage that one's eyes are the gateway into his or her soul. So naturally, on your wedding day, you'll want your soul-bearing barrier to be as open—and beautiful—as ever. What better way to do that than with an eye shadow, liner, and mascara look that's well-suited to you and special enough for your wedding? Here, we've outlined color and application basics and expert tips so no line, smudge, or swipe is lost come the big day.

Step One: The Shadow

Pinks
Why we love it: A mix of rosy tones and neutrals is sophisticated yet oh-so-bridal.
Expert tip: Apply beige all over lids, then sweep a darker pink onto the crease and a lighter one just below the brow, says makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor.
5-Colour in Rosy Tan #754, $60, Dior available at Sephora

Grays
Why we love it: While black shadow (a smoky staple) can make eyes look smaller—gray opens them up, says makeup pro Talia Shobrook.
Expert tip: Apply a slate tint near your lash line, then dab a lighter, metallic hue on the inner corners.
Eyes to Kill #1, $59, Giorgio Armani

Blue Green Eye Makeup Wedding

Blue-Greens
Why we love it: Wildly flattering on brown eyes, these shades are a great way to add color when you're not up for rocking a bright-red lip.
Expert tip: Use the teal as the base and the navy just under the crease.

Step Two: Eyeliner

Wedding Eyeliner Tips

Pencil
Best for: Creating soft, natural lines. "Pencils are made for blending," says Sotomayor. Expert tip: First, prep lids with eye-shadow primer, then apply liner in short, dotted strokes right at the roots of lashes.
Intense i-Color Defining Liner, $7.99, Almay

Cream
Best for: Versatility. It goes on intense but is easily softened with a brush.
Expert tip: For precision, place your elbow on a steady surface while you line the eyes, says Shobrook.
Ultimate Creme Eyeliner, $20, Becca available at Sephora

Liquid
Best for: Major drama. This is the ticket for doing a dainty "kitten eye" or full-on cat.
Expert tip: Start at the inner corner of your top lid; ease pressure toward the outer edge for a neat finish.
Eye Studio Master Duo Glossy Liquid Liner, $7.99, Maybelline New York

Powder
Best for: High-impact definition of the "water line," or the wet inner rims, says Sotomayor.
Expert tip: Dip a damp angled brush into the cake and gently press inside lash lines. Eyeliner Cake, $24, Illamasqua

Step Three: Mascara

Curved
Best for: Curling. Its curved shape lifts lashes up for a peppy, 10-hours-of-sleep vibe.
Expert tip: Use the wand's backside to target outer lashes.
Cobra mascara, $20, Lorac

Skinny
Best for: Lengthening. The long brush stretches lashes for a flirty look.
Expert tip: Linger at the tips to ensure nylon fibers extend them.
LashBlast Length Mascara, $7.49, CoverGirl

Fat
Best for: Volume. With 580 bristles, this baby pours it on thick.
Expert tip: Use the narrow end to coat your tiniest, hard-to-reach lashes.
Smoky Extravagant Mascara, $24, Make Up For Ever available at Sephora

Round
Best for: Definition. This odd-looking, spiky ball isolates every last lash.
Expert tip: For extra oomph, coat the bottom too.
Phenomen'Eyes High-Precision Panoramic Mascara, $30, Givenchy available at Sephora

No matter which look, products, and tools you choose, make sure to test it out with your makeup artist of choice during your hair and makeup trial. Most of all don't forget to sleep (as much as possible, of course) so those eyes look fresh, rested, and most importantly, open, in your wedding photos!
