Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger's relationship marches to the beat of its own drum—they got engaged after dating for one month, she wore a black wedding dress to their July nuptials in France, and the pair generally live the kind of rock 'n roll lifestyle you'd expect from them. Now, Canada's musical power couple is letting everyone in on the secret to their four months (and counting) of wedded bliss, and, surprisingly, a lot of their insight is downright conventional.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Lavigne and Kroeger dished on everything, from alcohol to dealing with long-distance phases of their marriage. We love dissecting all aspects of married life, particularly the importance of living together after saying "I do." It sounds like a no-brainer, but for a globetrotting couple like Lavigne and Kroeger, it's not always so easy.
What's their solution to their travel-heavy careers? "We don't spend more than two weeks apart," Lavigne stated in the interview. This means she's going to pull a Nicole Kidman and visit Nickelback, Kroeger's band, periodically during their upcoming tour in South Africa and Europe. Kroeger also plants to support Lavigne as she promotes her new album, which came out yesterday. We think that if means allow it, making the trip to visit a faraway hubby is a great idea! It works so well for Kidman and Urban, and it also provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy a honeymoon-like getaway.
That's not to say that they only thrive when jet-setting a deux. It's quite the opposite, they declared, calling their downtime their favorite time. "For us, true happiness is when we're both together and in our own bed," Kroeger said. "I crave the time I can snuggle up with her and watch a movie." For Lavigne's part, she added that, "After our honeymoon, we were like, let's just go home and be married. Really, our vacation is our home."
What they do in between visits and their time at home together is as coordinated as a worldwide concert tour. For instance, they stay sober to ensure a clear-headed relationship when they can't be together. "We don't drink when we're apart," Kroeger said. "Ever. Even if we're apart for weeks." Lavigne added that it's the responsible thing to do. "We want to protect what we have," she noted.
Another way to avoid temptation? No nightclubs. "We don't want to go anywhere that you're asking for trouble," Kroeger said, adding, "I don't want to be in Europe texting her, like 'Where are you?' This way we don't have to worry about any of that stuff."
To all of this detail, we say whatever works! Clearly, their alternative wedding style (colored wedding dress and all) paved the way for a loved-up honeymoon period, so here's to many more months of joy.
