Last night's American Music Awards had a ton of musical highlights. Katy Perry opened the show with a slightly controversial performance of her new song "Unconditionally" (she was dressed up as a geisha), Justin Timberlake brought down the house with the lovelorn tune "Drink You Away," and Miley Cyrus sang the penultimate number, a head-scratching rendition of her hit "Wrecking Ball." No, really: A giant cat mouthed the lyrics as she sang the song in a tiny two-piece adorned in pictures of cats.
As much as we enjoyed the musical numbers, we spent much of the show pondering the absence of so many singers' significant others. As Perry belted out her song's romantic lyrics (i.e. "There is no fear now/Let go and just be free/I will love you unconditionally"), we scanned the crowd for her on-again-off-again boyfriend John Mayer, but he was nowhere to be found. Apparently, though, work called him elsewhere: Mayer is currently touring the country in support of his newest album, Born and Raised.

Later in the show, Timberlake collected several honors, including favorite pop/rock male artist and favorite soul/R&B artist. But as he leaped up from his seat to claim his trophies, his wife Jessica Biel wasn't there to give him a congratulatory kiss. Fans wasted no time calling out her absence on Twitter, to which the actress had a witty retort. "I'm watching from home tonight. Calm down, Internet," she Tweeted.
Not that we're too concerned about her stay-at-home evening. Two days before the AMAs, Biel attended a performance from her hubby's 20/20 Experience World Tour, and earlier this month, the pair attended Timberlake's former fellow 'NSYNCer Chris Kirkpatrick's wedding together. Besides, most married couples spend some nights out apart, especially if one spouse is more of a homebody than the other. It's perfectly healthy!

Other celebs who showed up solo included Naya Rivera (sans fiancée Big Sean), Ciara (who walked the red carpet without her fiancée, Future), Zoë Saldana (she showed up without new husband Marco Perego), and many others. It sounds like it was the night everyone decided to cut loose with friends!
Of course, we can't end there without mentioning more about Cyrus's emotional performance of "Wrecking Ball." It's been more or less confirmed that the ballad is about Liam Hemsworth, her former fiancée. Whether or not she's moved on from their breakup, she sounded remarkably emotional during the song. At least she had a furry friend nearby to console her.
