A Foodie-Approved Menu for an August Country Wedding

What do real brides have to say about the wedding planning experience? Well, it's not all happy tears at the bridal boutique and indulgent cake tastings. Guest blogger Linley Taber shares the ins and outs of finding bridesmaid dresses that can withstand a high-kick on the dance floor, and more.

There are, I've realized along the way, more than a few pieces of the wedding puzzle I feel decidedly meh about. A fancy-pants bridesmaids luncheon? Not sure I need it. A flashy car to whisk us away? I'd rather take the bus with everyone else. The four-tiered wedding cake? If it has frosting, I'm game.

But the hors d'oeuvres and dinner we serve our guests—that's a totally different story. As amateur foodies and passionate home cooks, Michael and I knew from the start that food would play a big role in our big day. In fact, we want our reception to feel a lot like the dinner parties we love throwing for friends, with a great meal made of fresh seasonal ingredients, loads of wine, and Motown on the speakers.

To recreate this feel, we immediately decided we wanted a sit-down dinner served at long, banquet-style tables. Michael, ever the can-do groom, proceeded to take this "dinner party" theme to the next level. First, he suggested that he personally cook for all of our 120 guests. (Um, no.) Then, he insisted we at least grow all of the produce for the meal—despite the fact that we lack both a garden and any gardening experience whatsoever.

Thankfully, we were put in touch with the amazing caterer Peter Callahan, who took our request for a farm-to-table summer dinner and ran with it in the best possible way. (He also makes the most inventive, adorable hors d'oeuvres and desserts. How delicious do all of these photos look? Dear mini lobster rolls, I cannot wait to eat you.)

A couple of weeks ago we met for the last of our tastings. (And yes, I did sort of feel like a Top Chef judge, carefully pondering each bite of food). The menu we settled on is, what we consider to be, the perfect summer meal: Simple, gorgeous fish and beef and an abundance of late-August corn and tomatoes. We can't wait to dig in.
