After five and a half years of marriage, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are filing for divorce, according to People. The couple, who married in November 2006 at the romantic Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, share a daughter, Suri, 6. "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," says Holmes' attorney Jonathan Wolfe. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."
The news leaves us (obviously) wondering: What the heck happened? Just last December, Cruise said of Katie to People: "Every day I fall more in love with her. It's been quite an amazing five years because of her. She's an incredible woman. She's everything to me." And even more recently in an interview for Playboy's June issue, Tom shared that Katie is "funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better," adding, "I'm a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that. I don't know what to say—I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special." Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made their first public appearance as a couple in Rome in April 2005. Just a month later Cruise declared his love for then-girlfriend Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show, famously jumping up and down on her couch.
Past reports that put their marriage on the rocks have pointed to Tom's devotion to Scientology (Katie was raised Roman Catholic) and his "controlling ways" as fuel for a potential split. Tom also allegedly forced Katie to take a semi-hiatus from acting to focus on raising their daughter while he continued to make movies, most recently Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol and Rock of Ages.
This was Katie's first marriage and the third for Tom, who was previously married to Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and actress Mimi Rogers.
