Matthew McConaughey proposed to then-girlfriend Camila Alves like he does everything: slowly.
The actor, who is known as much for his laid-back lifestyle as for his movies, made sure Alves didn't rush the moment when he proposed last Christmas.
"It was the last gift to be opened and I wrapped it in seven different boxes so Camila would have to keep unwrapping. She got the ring, I took a knee and asked her to marry me and take my name," McConaughey told People.
True to form (or at least her beau's), Alves took her time with an answer: "After a bit, she conceded...thankfully."
The rose-cut Cathy Waterman engagement ring McConaughey chose was a perfect complement to the Kathy Rose wedding bands the couple exchanged at their Austin, Texas nuptials June 9. Alves also donned a diamond headpiece and 10-carat earrings, both by Neil Lane, for the occasion.
Of Alves's "Edwardian, art deco" accessories, Lane says, "[It's] vintage without being too old-fashioned. It's an exquisite, romantic look."
