If Jenny Packham and Matthew Williamson top your list of British bridal designers, then there's a third name in the UK game you should definitely know: Amanda Wakeley. Her sleek, semi-futuristic gowns have walked the red carpet on Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, and Scarlett Johansson, gaining notoriety for their modern approach to draping and asymmetrical shapes since Wakeley launched her eveningwear collection in 1990. But only since 2001 has the self-taught designer translated her aesthetic into white wedding dresses—now available Stateside in select New York, California, and Texas boutiques.
Wakeley's latest collection offers soft, fuss-free silhouettes in silk mikado, georgette, and satin, accented by harder-edged details, like diagonal seaming, ribbons of beads, and matte metallics. To highlight these contemporary styles, the wild beauty of Zulu Land in South Africa set the scene for Wakeley's lookbook shoot (seen here), a landscape which—as the designer's blog pointed out—"encapsulated the effortless but dramatic effect of our dresses."
