Ali and Matt both attended the University of Virginia but didn't know each other; they met at business school, in Chicago. The couple were married at a farm owned by the bride's family.
Ali wore a lace Monique Lhullier gown. "It was elegant, but it was also appropriate for the rustic wedding setting," she says. She accessorized with earrings and a bracelet, both family heirlooms. Matt wore a custom-made suit with a Hugo Boss tie. Her bouquet, designed by Pat's Floral Designs, included garden and spray roses, and lisianthus.
The ceremony was held on a hilltop, on land that was formerly a cow pasture. "My wedding style was 'sophisticated country,'" says Ali. Her three bridesmaids wore Amsale gowns and carried bouquets of hydrangeas, garden roses, berries, and sedum.
The cocktail reception was held in and around the barn. Hors d'oeurves, provided by caterer and wedding coordinator The Event Company, included truffled macaroni and cheese, grilled pork skewers, and a flatbread pizza station. Two different kinds of Bellinis served as the couple's signature drinks.
The reception was held in a chandelier-lit tent adjacent to the barn. Table centerpieces included arrangements of hydrangeas and sedum placed in antique-style vases. The simple escort cards were placed in barn board slats and beneath river rocks to keep them in place in case of a breeze. The menus were adorned with the couple's monogram, created by Anton Design LLC. Dinner included butternut squash soup and grilled flank steak.
To create a rustic-meets-modern lounge, The Event Company staff set up sleek white furniture (rented from Festive Fare) in the barn and illuminated the space with lanterns and candles. Ali and Matt performed their first dance to the Jayhawks' "All the Right Reasons," as performed by the band The Dickens. "Everyone danced nonstop," says Ali. "There was no space on the dance floor!"
