Starting Saturday, Elizabeth Taylor's landmark collection of jewelry will make its final appearance as a group before the pieces are scattered at auction December 13-16. Thousands of people will stream through Christie's Rockefeller Center gallery in Manhattan to admire Taylor's infamous vault of gems in a timed-ticketed exhibition, $30.
Among the notable baubles will be the 33.19 carat diamond gifted to the movie star in 1968 by then-husband Richard Burton, a standout piece expected to fetch between $2.5 million and $3.5 million. Also up for sale are Taylor's 16th century "La Peregrina" pearl—previously worn by various queens of Europe—and at least one of her seven wedding dresses, among other haute couture garments and a smattering of shoes and handbags. In total, the auction is estimated to garner more than $50 million. —Phillip B. Crook
