When approaching the voluminous world of ball gowns, it's important to find styles that reel you in from looking like the sartorial equivalent of a parade float. Lighter materials, like tulle, create a weightless effect, while design details, like embellished bodices and textured skirts, counterbalance the poofy-beyond-poofy nature of the ball gown silhouette. This Monique Lhuillier dress, for example, plays with a traditional ball gown's shape by creating a gradient of spiraling ruffles down the skirt. If only you could see the underside of the overlayer—the swirls of stitching are almost as stunning as the topside! Check out the rest of the featured styles in our roundup of ball gowns from Spring 2012, and head over to the BRIDES Dressing Room to virtually slip into this Monique Lhuillier design. —Phillip B.
