When news broke over the weekend that Carey Mulligan is engaged to boyfriend-of-five-months Marcus Mumford, our first thought was "She's going to wear Chanel!" The actress, à la Lily Allen, shares a muse-and-artist relationship with designer Karl Lagerfeld, so it's no stretch to think she'll wear custom couture on her wedding day. But just in case, we imagined what other labels she'll chose from based on her unconventional red-carpet style. For retro-inspired looks with modern twists, we like the cocktail-length lace dresses from (bottom, left to right) Marchesa and Elizabeth Fillmore. Considering how many short shift dresses the actress wears, these seem like a safe bet. But Carey also gravitates toward dramatic, detailed gowns, which is why we also chose (top, left to right) an asymmetrically draped bodice from Amsale, a quirky cutout neckline from Angel Sanchez, and a short-sleeved design from Carolina Herrera. Always being one to make surprising fashion choices, there's even a chance that Carey will turn up in a giant, crystal-covered ballgown, like something out of a Beyoncé video. But... probably not. —Phillip B. Crook
