Having trouble deciding on a wedding cake design? Imagine if designing wedding cakes was your job. Knowing all the options—and how to execute them well—could be overwhelming. So when Sandra Vona of the the Cake Boutique in Wilton, CT sent me a photo (above) of the lovely cake she recently made for her own wedding, I had to ask her how she came up with the design. "We wanted a really extravagant cake that would wow our guests, so we decided on a five-tier design decorated with over 100 handmade sugar flowers," says Sandra. "I love peonies but unfortunately they're not in season at the end of July. Even though they didn't end up in the bouquets, I was able to make them out of sugar and add them to the cake. And because my husband and I love chocolate, we decided on chocolate fudge cake with layers of chocolate ganache and chocolate chip buttercream."
