Guy Garb: It's a Madras, Madras, Madras, Madras World

It's the first day of summer, y'all! And you know what that means: It's time to break out the madras. The iconic patterned fabric originated in Chennai, India—called Madras by the colonial British—and eventually made its way to 19th-century London before settling into its current status as an American summer staple. Like, "wear while you eat apple pie on the 4th of July" kind of American staple. In addition to being lightweight in oppressive summer heat, madras also makes a colorful statement next to neutrals (think navy polo and patterned shorts). If you've got a casual rehearsal dinner to attend or golf plans with the groomsmen before a weekend wedding, madras is the way to go. Need more help working madras into your gentlemanly style? Brooks Brothers, as always, has all the answers. And be sure to check out our Grooms & Guys page for more summer dressing ideas. —Phillip B. Crook
