For her wedding in Gloucestershire, England on Saturday, 26-year-old singer Lily Allen sported one of bridal fashion's hottest trends: lace sleeves. But unlike Kate Middleton's universally applauded lace dress, Allen's Delphine Manivet gown has many of us, err, scratching our heads—and not because the dress displayed the star's new baby bump. To accentuate Allen's changing figure, French designer Manivet created a fishtail gown with a sweetheart bodice, boatneck lace overlay, and elbow-length sleeves, which Allen accessorized with a 1920s-esque veil and peep-toe ivory heels.
While we first predicted the star would wear something more in line with her vintage bohemian style, we now see why that choice wouldn't have suited her pregnancy. But call us crazy: we think Allen still had more flattering, belly-friendly options to consider. The cream Ivy & Aster high-waisted gown (top right) would accentuate her new figure, while the lace panel would add a little modesty to the youthful, strapless silhouette. If Allen wanted to stick with her designer of choice, we also like Manivet's Arthur gown (middle right) for its forgiving shape, elongating V-neck, and softer sleeves. But for a truly different approach, we suggest the bump-concealing drapery and cinched waist of this Nicole Miller gown (bottom right) that, if nothing else, at least evokes the singer's former fashionista, Chanel-clad status. —Phillip B.
