'Operation Pumpkin': The Royal Runaway Bride Plan

Had Kate decided to pull a Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride and ditch poor Will at the altar, police were on standby the day of the Royal Wedding to implement "Operation Pumpkin." The plan called for Kate to flee on foot (to allow Will the chance to run after her), with her bodyguards trailing discreetly behind and plainclothes undercover police, MI5 officers, and SAS soldiers forming a moving wedge ahead of her through the crowd. A highly placed M15 official told The Register that Clarence House and police representatives debated how long Will would be allowed to pursue his fleeing bride, finally agreeing on the span of half a mile. "Naturally, they wanted us to simply make her go through with it," the official said. "So we said, look, if she bottles it we'll just have to get her out pronto...then sort her out with a new identity and young Bill will just have to go on the honeymoon on his own." Although such a scene would surely have made for good TV, obviously no escape route was needed. —Phillip B. Crook
