Very Open Disclaimer: Let me try to persuade you that this doesn't count as self-promotion, because I don't work for BRIDES Magazine and had nothing to do with the creation of this app. (I adore Millie, the Editor in Chief, but still think I'm able to render an unbiased opinion.) True, I am the Editor in Chief of Brides.com and Brides Local Magazines, but more than that, I'm a fan of well-produced wedding content that helps engaged couples find great ideas and bring them to life.
I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the app this week and was kind of blown away. So if you're still onboard, here's what I liked best, in order from front to back:
1. I love spinning the bride on the cover to get a 360-degree view of the dress—which has the perfect, universally flattering neckline.
2. I have to mention how cool it is to be able to tap straight through to one of the stories on the Brides.com highlights page.
3. I'm a tad obsessed with the ticker of information running at the bottom of some of the pages.
4. There are live polls! So it's real-time results voted on by other iPad users with the digital magazine.
5. There are so many surprising images that come to life or that move to reveal another beautiful image. And there is video throughout—including inside the lush fashion stories.
6. As a magazine editor and a magazine reader, I must say it is nice to read one long beautiful story in sequence without ads in between. But the equally cool part is that when I see a new gown designer in an ad, I can click on it to see the designer's full collection.
7. Another personal favorite: In the style section there is a wedding gown by Angel Sanchez that you can see in motion thanks to an embedded clip from his runway show (my favorite of last season).
8. Looking through the nine-step "Dramatic Eye" instructions by tapping was the first time I've seen a how-to makeup story and fully understood how to replicate the look. Seriously.
9. The honeymoon section is way more extensive than in the print version of the magazine. There are so many bookable options included for the great story on "Hot Hotels."
10. This may sound silly when I try to explain it, but there's a map of the U.S., and when you click on each state, the "iconic beverage" of that state appears. I did this so many times that it's possible I now know the drink names better than the capitals.
11. I lied. There are 11 things. The last page lists a collection of first-dance song ideas, and you can tap and listen right there. (You can also click through to iTunes to buy it). This sounds like "no big whoop" until you actually have to plan a playlist and realize you don't know the proper names of most songs. Here they are, easy as pie. —Julie Raimondi
