Lessons for Red-Carpet Grooms from the 2011 Oscars

If the Oscars red carpet has one lesson to teach men, it's that a penguin suit's range is all about the details.

Best Actor-winner Colin Firth looked every bit the classic movie star in a Tom Ford wide shawl collar suit with large bow tie, black studs and white pocket square. It's a style many others that night mimicked with their own twists, like Andrew Garfield, in a glossy lapel Louis Vuitton tux, and Matthew McConaughey, who opted for a higher-cut jacket and a crisper pocket square. Always a fan of a little extra flair, Adam Shankman went with a shine-trimmed lapel and a scarf-stuffed pocket. But he's a dancer, flair's a prerequisite.

Some A-list men said no to the traditional bow tie—hand-tied, clip-on or otherwise—for a more current long necktie, Javier Bardem and Keith Urban's slimmer-cut ties being the most modern. And then there were the men who, yet again, attempted to pull off black-on-black (and don't even get us started on that beard, Christian Bale).
