I recently had a chance to sit down with a member of the Tobago Tourism Board and was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned about this little-known Caribbean island. Here are some nuggets I gleaned that might be helpful to you in your destination wedding or honeymoon planning:
-Tobago is home to only five large (100+ rooms) hotels; however, there are plenty of smaller-scale villas available for rent that can accommodate anywhere from 2 to 20 people. If you're thinking of hosting a destination wedding, renting a villa is an excellent way to house your out-of-town guests—everyone can hang out and relax together; plus, it's more cost-effective than booking individual hotel rooms.
-Tobago is located outside the hurricane belt, so statistics-wise, you should be in the clear if you're thinking of hosting an outdoor ceremony or reception at any time of year.
-Best time to honeymoon: July and August. The island (population: 60,000) becomes one huge party as residents host Tobago's major heritage and harvest festivals, making it a great time to visit and soak in the local culture.
-Getting to Tobago from the northeast is pretty easy—Caribbean Airlines now offers a direct under five-hour flight from JFK to Crown Point every Sunday—no transfer in San Juan required or having to board a tiny puddle-jumper from sister island Trinidad.
