Last week I paid a visit to the Pipino Salon at Spa Chakra on Fifth to try out the new Brazilian Blowout treatment. If you haven't heard of it, it's a hair conditioning treatment that relaxes hair, adds softness and shine, and totally eliminates frizz without using any chemicals. And it lasts for three months. So basically, it's amazing.
Unlike Japanese straightening and other Brazilian straightening treatments, the Brazilian Blowout doesn't make hair stick-straight—it just softens whatever wave or curl you might have, meaning that your hair will still have natural body and volume, and can still be worn curly or wavy. And, most importantly, it allows you to avoid the 24 to 96 hour waiting period straightening treatments require before sweating in, washing, or styling your hair. And because the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of your hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to smooth the cuticle, it's totally safe for color treated or chemically processed hair.
The whole process takes under 90 minutes: my stylist Josh first shampooed my hair, then divided it into sections and applied a small amount of the treatment, blow dried it with a round brush, flat ironed it to seal in the solution, rinsed it out and applied a special conditioning mask. Then my hair was blow dried one final time, and voila! My frizzy, curly mane was transformed into smooth, soft, and totally manageable hair that I can now style without a straightening iron or 30+ minutes with a blow dryer. The treatment costs $300 and up; visit brazilianblowout.com to find a stylist near you. —Lauren Matthews, editor, Brides New York
