If you watched Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney wed during last night's airing of The Bachelor wedding, then you witnessed the downpour that soaked the couple in the middle of exchanging their vows. Aside from wondering why in the world their wedding planner didn't arrange for a tent or a backup indoor space (always have a Plan B for an outdoor wedding, people!), I was majorly impressed that Molly's makeup didn't budge at all, despite the fact that she had rain dripping down her face. So I got in touch with Molly's makeup artist, the talented Mally Roncal, to get the inside scoop on creating a smudge-proof wedding day look.
What type of look were you going for with Molly?
My goal was to make Molly look like a classic bride, but with a modern, sexy twist. I gave her a soft yet defined eye with full, beautiful lashes, glowing healthy skin and a soft, nude lip with a hint of pink. She knew my style and was completely open to hearing what I had in mind for her...then we just went for it!
Luckily, not every bride has to deal with a torrential rain during the ceremony, but everyone wants to make sure her makeup stays put. What products do you recommend to get long-lasting makeup?
For eyes, it's critical to start with an eye primer and eye shadow base. When choosing your eye products, always make sure to use waterproof products.
When it comes to the rest of the face, start with an all-over layer of face primer. This provides a smooth surface for the foundation to adhere to throughout the day. On Molly, I used Mally Beauty's Ultimate Performance Professional Foundation and set it with Visible Skin Adjustable Coverage powder foundation. I wanted to ensure Molly's makeup would stay put, especially for the outdoor ceremony. Setting powders tend to make the complexion look gray in photos, so I like to use a powder foundation instead to give skin a warm finish.
How do you guarantee an all-day glow?
It's all about applying different layers of insurance. I used Mally Beauty Couture Color Custom Blush directly on skin, then applied the foundation steps, followed by my 24/7 Professional Blush System. It has a cream-base color that's topped with a matching powder blush. These layers of color helped keep her skin bright and glowing throughout the day.
If a bride doesn't have a professional beauty team on hand for touch-ups like Molly did, what should she make sure to have in her purse on the wedding day?
These are my four touch-up must-haves: Mally Beauty's Evercolor Poreless Face Defender, which mattifies and smooths without the dry, ashy look of powder. Second is Q-Tips, which gently help touch-up any drama, especially around the delicate eye area. Third is your favorite lip gloss. Lip color is usually the first to fade, so it's important to keep a tube on hand at all times for quick touch-ups. And finally, mascara. Instead of adding more eyeliner, which can darken the area and make the bride look tired, add mascara when needed to comb the lashes up and open the eye.
