Easy and affordable handmade Valentine's Day gifts

Nice Package

Long before Valentine's Day became synonymous with generic, mass-produced mementos, this special occasion was typically celebrated with an exchange of handwritten notes and handmade tokens of affection. The tradition started in the early 1700s, but not until the end of that century—due to improvements in printing technology—did mass-produced cards become the norm. We have the Victorians to thank for the style of modern Valentine's Day fare—they liked their paper goodies dolled up with lavish images of lovebirds, cupids, and flowers. But your local drugstore's offerings are bound to be dopey imitations, so this year, let's return to tradition by creating handmade Valentine's Day gifts and greetings that are as romantic—and authentic—as it gets. We asked nine of our favorite designers to share their best ideas. See them here. —Heather Lee
